Year 10 Geography Homework

Geographers, read the scenario below then leave your comments explaining what you think should be done and why.

Dawlish is a small town on the south coast of England. A pretty place, it has a small but important tourist trade that provides jobs and income to the town. The main railway line connecting the south west to London runs along the coast through Dawlish. Recently the area and the railway line has been under threat from coatal erosion. The local council does not have a huge amount to spend and are keen to save the railway line and preserve the look of the town. Below are a list of options the council could use:
-sea-wall
-groynes
-gabions
-managed retreat
-rip rap
-beach replenishment
Research each of the coastal defenses above and make a recommendation of which one Dawlish should implement and why. Remember to leave your names on the post.

Hello FCA

I am sure you are aware that this week sees the annual Children in Need event. We at FCA will be hosting our own activities - the 6th form will be wearing fancy dress, i have heard rumours of a WWII soldier and a dalmation!

Younger learners are being encouraged to have a non-uniform day and wear something blue to also raise awareness of Anti-Bullying week.

Use the link to find out more about Children in Need, who knows it may give you some ideas about how to raise money or support an event in the local area. Send us your comments about what you thought of the day, how you raised money and why you think it is imporant to help children around Britain.

Happy Half Term

Dear Learners,

I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a good half term and say a big well done for a fantastic start to the year. It has been a busy start with lots happening, including Open Evening. The department received lots of compliments and comments about your excellent work - so thank you and keep it up!

Lessons have been busy and the teachers have been really positive about the progress you are making and the attitudes you are showing to learning. The picture above shows a year 8 lesson that was looking at Synagogues and encouraging learners to use their team working and self manager skills (two of the PLTS) - they have produced some superb work, which will be going on display straight after the holidays.

If you are interested in the history of Halloween then why not click on the link to read all about it - perhaps you could leave a comment about your ideas and views?

We would also like to know if you have any ideas about the trips you would like to go on? The best idea will win a prize!

Have a great holiday and stay safe,

Miss Fox and the Humanities team.

Please bring them to Miss Hinde in E9 after the summer break.

We are LIVE!!!

Dear readers,

This term has been absolutely manic and the Humanities teachers have been busily preparing for next term - I know you are thinking of the summer holidays!

This year has been very busy and lots has been happening! March saw a group of staff and students visit Auschwitz and Krakow, it was a truly inspirational visit and encouraged all of us to think about the atrocities that took place during WWII.

In May a group of teachers took 40 students to the Natural History Museum in London to learn about Earthquakes and Volcanoes, it was a fantastic day, but who would have thought we would see MR R in a pink, shiny jacket using a leaf blower?!

We have also helped form tutors complete a lesson on National Sports Week based on the olympic values. Our very own Mr S launched his own fitness campaign to raise money for Great Ormond Street and Cancer Research - he amazingly lost a stone in only a few weeks.

Finally we are pleased to announce the appointment of a new Humanities teacher who will be joining us in September.
Leave us your thoughts and comments,
Enjoy your summer.
